Federal Politics
This page contains my own personal opinions about the political situation in Canada. Feel free to disagree.
Canada has five major political parties at the moment. I intend to rip up all of them.
First, of course, we have the liberals, led by Jean Chretien. Their motto is "Do nothing, and hope nobody notices". After paying tens of millions of dollars for a Royal Commision on the Status of Native Peoples, and reading several volumes of recommendations, the grits have done nothing. Quebec had a referendum, and Chretien has done nothing.

Second, we have the official opposition, who has the job of telling the liberals what to do. While it is true that we could use senate reform, the Reform party seems to have the opinion that whatever the Americans are doing is the right thing for Canada. A few years ago they were insisting that we need to have economic union with the United States (as if the Free Trade Agreement didn't cost us enough jobs), and now they are insisting that we should not be trading with Cuba (since it annoys the yanks). In addition to the bigoted elements in the party (although they certainly don't have a monopoly on bigotry), they are also as far right-wing as possible. They demand we get rid of anything which costs money (bilingualism, multiculture), and want to bring in American-style health care to "compliment" our universal health care system. Of course, world experiance has shown that TWO-TIERED HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS DON'T WORK (since the publicly funded tier keeps having its funding cut, which means less people use it, which means the gov. cuts its budget further, which means less people will use it....), but that doesn't bother them at all. The Americans don't have universal health care, and they're doing fine, right? If they can't figure out that WE AREN'T AMERICANS, then they will NEVER get my vote.

The Tories, of course, do not have any of my respect, simply due to Lyin' Brian Mulroney. He may not be the party leader anymore, but he's sucked enough out of the Canadian taxpayer to have my disdain forever. As well, his horrible habit of jumping whenever Bush or Reagan said "frog" was infuriating to anyone who thought that Canada should be run by Canadians.

The Bloc Quebecois, of course, want to rip Quebec out of Canada, regardless of what Quebecers want. Until the next referendum, of course, they can be recognized by their distinctive call, "Give Quebec more money or we'll separate. Give Quebec more status and maybe we won't separate just yet. Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!"

There is, of course, one last bastion of left-wing thought in Canada- the NDP. While they have some strange ideas ("job-sharing", I think was mentioned during the last election), they are still better than the alternatives.
