The Heraldry Society of Canada

British Columbia/Yukon Branch

This is the website of the BC/Yukon branch of the HSC. The branch is dedicated to fostering an understanding and appreciation of the noble science of heraldry in western Canada. To this end, the branch publishes The Blazon, a newsletter which covers some of the latest and most interesting news of heraldry in Canada and around the world. We also have an annual general meeting, which is supplemented by smaller, less formal gatherings throughout the year. Membership in the Branch is not restricted to members of the Heraldry Society of Canada, nor is is restricted to Canadians who live in the west. From the Summer-Autumn 1999 issue of The Blazon-

A random survey of our Branch membership list reveals: there are 41 armigers, one peer and courtesy title of the same, one baronet, one title from the Holy Roman Empire and one courtesy title of the same, a lord of the manor, one member from Newfoundland, three from Oregon, one from Quebec, eleven from Ontario, four from Saskatchewan, four from Alberta, and none from the Yukon (oh dear!), but one from Australia. We counted two owners of Rolls Royces, four PhDs, two PEngs, four QCs, seven Fellows and one honourary Fellow of the Society, 15 using military rank, one entitled to RCM Police rank, one retired judge, three doctors, five barristers-at-law, one gentleman of the cloth, one professor, one teacher, one archivist, one former M.P. and three Militia honourary colonels amongst our membership. Also, a lieutenant-governor and one former vice-regal personage and two members who have Gardez as a motto. There are two corporate members and three islanders (excluding Newfoundland and Vancouver Island). We have a clan cheiftan, a bannerman to a clan chief and a chief herald, two genealogists, three United Empire Loyalists and several memebrs associated with Orders eg. British Empire (1), Military Merit (1), Ven St John (12), St Lazarus (21), Knights Hospitaller (3), Malta (2) and Templars (1). There are five heraldic craftsmen/women and four recognized heraldic consultants at your service. Natural children and/or those entitled to an heraldic distinction of the same in their blazon were not included in this survey. In this respect, the Branch President wishes it to be known that it was the Flag Shop, not his father, responsible for the addition of a Bordure Compony to his personal banner.

Results of Branch surveys are seldom accurate and believed to be right within two percent of the time, give or take a bit of fudging here and there. Our pollster is not the same one used by various departments of government(s) - Editor

One should also point out that we have two Heralds Extraordinary in our midst: R. G. M. Macpherson, Niagara; and G. L. Anderson, Cowichan.
