The City of Pelham

The red maple tree on a white background in these arms represents the "Comfort Maple"- thought to be the oldest maple tree in Canada, and also represents our nation (red and white, maple leaves). The green chief containing a pelican vulning itself (it was once believed that pelicans cut their chests to feed their young with the blood, and were thus symbols of the extreme in selfless maternal love) is taken from the coat of arms of Mr. Pelham, one of the founders of the community (Pelham sounds a bit like Pelican, probably more so to medieval ears). The crest is a hand holding a bunch of concord grapes, since Pelham is in the wine-growing region of Ontario.
