The City of Montréal

This coat of arms was designed by Jacques Viger, first mayor of Montreal. The current version was adopted (not granted) on March 21, 1938. The cross of St. George (representing Christian faith) lies between the national emblems of the main ethnic groups of Montrealers in the 19th century- the French (fleur-de-lys), the English (the Lancastrian rose), the Scots (the thistle), and the Irish (the shamrock).

The crest, a beaver, is a typical Canadian symbol for industry. The maple leaves surrounding the shield are typical for Quebec heraldry.

The flag, of course, is based on the arms.

Images and data were taken from the City of Montreal.
