The City of Calgary

These coats of arms were downloaded from the official web-brochure. It is not a legal coat of arms - landscapes such as the chief (sunset over the Rocky Mountains) are not considered proper heraldry. The shield is actually a reversal of the Alberta coat of arms- this has a silly landscape in the chief, and the cross of St. George (symbolic of the English settlers who founded the city) in the main body of the shield. In this case, the cross is surmounted by a maple leaf (representing Canada) and a bison (the original inhabitant of the plains). The horse and steer as supporters represent the original source of Calgary's wealth (ranching, thus the nickname "Cowtown").

The crest is a mural crown (signifying a city) with the setting sun representing Calgary's position in western Canada. Below the shield is the civic motto ("Onward") and the dates of the foundation and incorporation of the city. Along with the scroll are the floral emblems of Britian (rose, thistle, shamrock, and leek), and the Union Jack and the Canadian Red Ensign.

red flag

What can I say about this flag? Unlike that of Edmonton, it has the virtue of being simple and recognizable. The "C" stands for Calgary, and the white Stetson is about as representative of Calgary as one can get.
